NY CULTURE: Heard & Scene - Celebrating BAM with Beckett
December 10, 2011

The Brooklyn Academy of Music held its "Next Wave Gala" this week with a benefit performance of Samuel Beckett's "Krapp's Last Tape," starring John Hurt.

The Irish playwright, said BAM President Karen Brooks Hopkins, is "always 'next wave.'"

A celebratory dinner was held over candlelight at Skylight One Hanson, a dramatic art-deco venue around the corner from BAM. Guests included the composer Philip Glass and the reality-TV star Alex McCord, who was singing Beckett's praises.

The newly pregnant Maggie Gyllenhaal was also in attendance, swapping her steak for a salad and chatting with the actress Mamie Gummer. Ms. Gyllenhaal said she regularly checks out BAM's offerings, noting that it's up there with Russ & Daughters as one of her New York go-tos.

"I don't think I really liked Beckett in high school," she said. "But I loved this play. It had the right amount of weirdness."

It was also refreshingly short, clocking in at under an hour, she noted. "Especially if you sat through 'Atys,'" she added, referring to BAM's recent four-hour opera.
